Contacting rotary transmitter of a slip ring

Slip rings for security technology

»Security is the top priority: at airports, at sea and in national airspace. Our slip rings make a vital contribution to this – for example, in baggage scanners, in radar systems or in key reconnaissance and surveillance systems.«

Robustness and fail-safe operation

For safety-critical applications, rotary joints are required that combine high performance with robustness and fail-safe operation. This is precisely what characterizes our slip rings designed for security and defense tasks.

Baggage scanners

Our slip ring for baggage scanners serve to facilitate quick and reliable scanning of passengers' checked and hand baggage. At the security checkpoints at airports, CT scanners are employed that have been developed especially for this application. Among other factors, they stand out due to their internal diameter of up to two meters. The transmission of image and signal data may be contacting or contactless depending on the requirements. When scanning carry-on baggage, rotating CT slip rings have a decisive advantage: Fluids and laptops can be checked extremely reliably without having to be unpacked.

Marine monitoring

The marine radar developed for maritime surveillance tasks is able to capture more than 1,000 targets at the same time – at a distance up to 2,000 km. It is so precise that it is able to differentiate between a dove and a tennis ball for example. A component manufactured by SCHLEIFRING provides the radar antenna with the energy required to generate the continuous electromagnetic waves. At the same time, the slip ring also provides for the antenna cooling, as the sensitive electronics must not exceed certain temperatures. Furthermore, all radar signals received run over the slip ring back to the ship’s computer, where they are then processed and evaluated.

Radar systems

Continuous monitoring of airspace through 360° together with the power and signal transmission required for this is one of the most challenging tasks. Slip rings for radar systems are correspondingly complex. Their development requires decades of experience, the highest level of precision, and comprehensive know-how in product design. Before they are produced, they are first tested over a very long period of time. Whether at sea, on land or in the air: We have developed customer-specific solutions for numerous applications and for this purpose we have combined a wide range of technologies for the transmission of power, data and high frequencies in order to create new solutions that meet the requirements of the application in question.

Slip rings for Leopard 2

Security also requires high-tech solutions in the defense sector. We have been developing and manufacturing these for 50 years in the form of military rotary joints for the Leopard 2 battle tank. It is equipped with two slip rings: one of which provides for the all-round vision of the viewing system – day and night. The other, the specially developed periscope slip ring, transmits the electro-optical viewing system’s power and signals by means of state-of-the-art gold-on-gold contact technology.

Considerably more complex to develop and manufacture is the Leopard 2’s turret slip ring. It is located between the turret and the hull. The rotary transmission system ensures that even when the turret and the tank’s hull are rotating in opposite directions, electrical signals, data and the necessary power supply for the turret are transferred reliably. We are constantly developing both systems further to cater for increasing demands: with more transmission technology, more power and faster transmission rates in unvarying installation spaces.
